Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) has recently launched a professional development webinar series focusing on enhancing patient medication safety. The series, titled ‘Optimizing Medication Safety in Primary Care & Outpatient Settings: An Interactive Series,’ is set to run from April to November 2024. Targeting physicians, allied health professionals, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, and students, the virtual series is coordinated by WCM-Q’s Division of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Leading the course are Dr. Phyllis Navti, clinical pharmacist and assistant director of CPD at WCM-Q, and Dr. Anas Hamad, director of the pharmacy department and head of medication safety/quality at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). The series comprises six sessions delving into critical aspects of medication safety, including root causes of prescription and medication errors, polypharmacy and de-prescribing, medicine reconciliation, high-risk medication management, and future medication safety strategies. The upcoming webinar, ‘Root Causes of and Mitigation Strategies for Medication Safety Issues,’ is scheduled for May 20, 2024, with registration available through the provided link.

One notable aspect of this professional development series is its accreditation, both locally by the Ministry of Public Health’s Department of Healthcare Professions – Accreditation Section and internationally by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). This recognition highlights the quality and relevance of the content covered in the webinars, affirming the value it provides to participants seeking to enhance their knowledge and skills in medication safety within the healthcare sector.

As healthcare professionals are increasingly tasked with managing complex medication regimens and ensuring patient safety, the need for ongoing education and training in this field is paramount. By offering a comprehensive and interactive webinar series, WCM-Q aims to equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to optimize medication safety in primary care and outpatient settings. The diverse range of topics covered in the series reflects the multifaceted nature of medication safety challenges faced by practitioners across various healthcare disciplines.

In a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, staying abreast of current best practices and emerging trends in medication safety is essential for healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality care. The webinar series provides a platform for participants to engage with expert speakers, exchange ideas, and gain insights into practical strategies for addressing medication safety issues in clinical practice. By fostering a collaborative learning environment, WCM-Q seeks to empower participants to implement evidence-based solutions that enhance patient outcomes and promote a culture of safety within healthcare organizations.

Overall, the launch of Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar’s professional development webinar series on medication safety signifies a commitment to advancing healthcare education and promoting continuous improvement in patient care. Through its comprehensive curriculum, expert-led sessions, and accreditation by reputable institutions, the series serves as a valuable resource for healthcare professionals seeking to enhance their competency in medication safety and contribute to the advancement of quality healthcare delivery in Qatar and beyond. Participants can look forward to a rewarding learning experience that will not only deepen their understanding of medication safety principles but also enable them to make a positive impact on patient outcomes in their daily practice.
