The European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has expressed her support for the proposal put forth by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for a European air defence shield. This proposal aims to protect the European Union’s airspace from various threats, including aircraft, missiles, and drones. Tusk and Mitsotakis believe that Europe needs a bold initiative to demonstrate its commitment to air defence and deter any potential aggressors. They emphasize the importance of developing a highly capable air defence system to protect all member states and citizens of the EU.

Both Tusk and Mitsotakis, along with von der Leyen, are members of the European People’s Party (EPP), leading in the polls ahead of the upcoming European elections. Von der Leyen has made strengthening Europe’s defence capabilities a key part of her electoral platform, aiming to create synergies between member states’ defence industries. This collaboration is deemed necessary to provide Ukraine with the necessary arms and ammunition to defend against Russia’s invasion. The proposal for a European air defence shield is seen as a crucial step towards ensuring the safety of European skies.

The need for the EU to enhance its air defence capabilities was highlighted during a recent summit where Ukraine appealed to member states for assistance in fending off missile attacks from Russia. Germany and the Netherlands urged other countries to consider donating their air defence systems to Ukraine. However, many capitals are hesitant to do so, fearing it may weaken their own defence capabilities. Despite the existing Patriots systems in countries like Spain, Greece, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Romania, there is reluctance to part with these systems to avoid leaving the EU vulnerable.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has acknowledged the capabilities available within the alliance to support Ukraine but action has been slow in materializing due to concerns about the impact on the EU’s own defence posture. Tusk and Mitsotakis’ proposal to bolster the EU’s air defence is seen as a potential catalyst for further advancements in European defence and security industries. By strengthening the EU’s ability to defend its airspace, it sets the stage for future upgrades in the sector, ensuring the safety and security of European citizens and military forces.

The proposal for a European air defence shield is part of a broader effort to safeguard the EU against emerging threats in Europe’s periphery. Von der Leyen’s endorsement of the initiative signals a willingness to prioritize the security of European skies and demonstrate the EU’s commitment to defending its member states. The proposal aligns with the EPP’s agenda and reflects the growing consensus among European leaders regarding the need for enhanced air defence capabilities. Overall, the push for a European air defence shield represents a proactive approach to addressing security challenges in the region and fostering greater cooperation among EU member states to strengthen collective defence.
