Red Bull’s Max Verstappen emerged as the winner of the Spanish Grand Prix, despite McLaren having a quick car. Christian Horner, Red Bull boss, highlighted that Verstappen made the key difference in the race. Verstappen secured his seventh win in 10 races from second on the grid, with McLaren’s Lando Norris starting on pole. The victory extended Verstappen’s lead in the overall standings to 69 points, making him the closest title challenger.

Horner explained that it was crucial for Verstappen to pass Norris into turn one, especially after Mercedes’ George Russell briefly stole the lead at the start. The race was dominated by tire wear, making it essential for Verstappen to quickly overtake Russell. Horner praised Verstappen for driving a perfect race and making the essential difference to secure the win. Unlike last year, where Red Bull had a dominant season winning most races, this year has seen four different winners and pole sitters in the last four races.

Despite McLaren’s strong performance, Horner believed that Norris would have been challenging to beat if he hadn’t messed up the start. However, Verstappen took the lead early on lap three and managed to build a safe gap. Norris and Verstappen finished 2.2 seconds apart, with Norris fighting back after losing track position. Horner acknowledged Norris as a consistent challenger, with four second-place finishes and a win in the last six rounds.

Norris expressed disappointment in not being able to close the performance gap with Verstappen. He emphasized the importance of challenging and beating Verstappen rather than focusing on his position in the championship standings. Despite moving to second in the championship, Norris remained focused on narrowing the performance gap and challenging Verstappen in future races. He acknowledged missed opportunities in recent races but remained confident in McLaren’s capabilities to secure victories.

Horner recognized the progress and consistency Norris has shown in recent races, positioning him as a standout contender. Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez, has struggled to match the champion’s performance, reflecting a significant points difference between the two Red Bull drivers. The current Formula One season has shown a more competitive field, with multiple winners and pole sitters, indicating a more unpredictable and exciting season compared to the previous year’s dominance by Red Bull. Verstappen’s flawless driving and consistency have been pivotal in securing victories in the challenging season.
