US demands explanation from Israel after ‘horrific’ Gaza airstrike

The recent Israeli airstrike on a residential block in northern Gaza that resulted in the deaths of two dozen children has sparked outrage and concern from the US government. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller described the incident as “horrifying” and demanded an explanation from Israeli officials. This comes on the heels of a threat by the Biden administration to withdraw military support from Israel if humanitarian conditions do not improve. The US emphasized the need for a ceasefire to protect the strategic interests of Israel and ensure the safety of civilians in the region.

In addition to condemning the deadly airstrike, the US expressed deep concern over new legislation passed by Israel that would ban the operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). The US government warned that the decision could have disastrous consequences for millions of Palestinians who rely on UNRWA for essential services. The European Commission has also called on Israel to repeal the legislation, highlighting the potential collapse of the humanitarian system in Gaza without the support of UNRWA. Efforts to appeal the decision and find alternative solutions are underway, but the situation remains uncertain.

Throughout the conflict, UNRWA has played a crucial role in providing aid and essential services to the people of Gaza. However, Israel has accused the agency of being infiltrated by Hamas and exploiting aid to strengthen its position in the region. Despite these allegations, aid groups stress the importance of UNRWA’s work and the critical gap that would be left if its operations were banned. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel will continue to facilitate humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza while ensuring the country’s security.

As tensions escalate and the humanitarian crisis worsens in Gaza, the US government has called for an immediate ceasefire to protect civilians and prevent further loss of life. The international community has also urged Israel to reconsider its decision to ban UNRWA and to find alternative ways to provide aid to those in need. The situation in Gaza remains precarious, with millions of Palestinians at risk of losing access to essential services if UNRWA’s operations are halted. It is crucial for Israel and its international partners to work together to ensure the safety and well-being of all those affected by the conflict.
