The United States has announced a new aid package for Ukraine to help the country defend itself against Russia’s escalating efforts to capture Kharkiv, the second-largest city in Ukraine. This aid package, the third instalment since late April, includes rockets, patrol vehicles, and anti-radiation missiles from existing US stockpiles. The White House national security spokesman John Kirby emphasized that this aid is intended to strengthen Ukraine’s defences, particularly in Kharkiv. He expressed confidence that this assistance will help Ukraine throughout 2024, despite potential further Russian advances.

In response to the escalating situation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reassured the nation of incoming US weaponry, instilling confidence in their ability to fight off Russian attacks. The aid package comes after months of delay and congressional approval. On Friday, Ukraine had to rush reinforcements to its northeastern region to hold off a Russian attempt to breach local defences. The intense overnight shelling targeted a city near the Russian border, resulting in civilian casualties and prompting the evacuation of thousands of people. Russian infantry also attempted to penetrate Ukrainian defences, prompting the deployment of reserve units to fend off the attack.

The assistance includes rockets, patrol vehicles, and anti-radiation missiles from existing US stockpiles. The White House national security spokesman John Kirby expressed confidence that this aid would fortify Ukraine throughout 2024, despite potential further Russian advances. The intense overnight shelling targeted a city near the Russian border, resulting in civilian casualties and prompting the evacuation of thousands of people. Russian infantry also tried to penetrate Ukrainian defences, leading to the deployment of reserve units to fend off the attack. This tactical switch by Moscow signals a new phase in the war, with Ukrainian officials anticipating further Russian advances. Russian military bloggers suggested that this assault could be the start of a Russian attempt to create a “buffer zone” to halt Ukrainian attacks on Russian border regions.
