A 35-year-old Filipina cashier, Angellica Batallones, experienced vision problems in her right eye, making simple tasks like reading prices and interacting with customers challenging. After realizing that she could not see beyond one meter, she sought medical help. Despite visiting multiple centers in Ajman, she was advised to go back to the Philippines for treatment. Finally, she was diagnosed with retinal detachment, a condition where the retina pulls away from its normal position. The medical team recommended scleral buckling combined with laser treatment to address the issue.

Retinal detachment occurs when the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, detaches from its normal position due to various reasons like age-related changes, eye trauma, family history, or severe nearsightedness. Dr. Kapil Das, the ophthalmologist at Thumbay Hospital Ajman, explained that the gradual onset of retinal detachment led to compromised retina structure and function in Batallones’ case. The surgery performed was a non-drainage scleral buckle procedure, different from the usual method of draining fluid under the retina. The laser treatment secured the retina by creating adhesions around the tear, ensuring stability and minimizing the risk of future detachment.

After the surgery, Batallones experienced pain and nervousness about the recovery. However, her retina settled well, and she regained her vision, now being able to read comfortably. Dr. Das highlighted the importance of early medical intervention in such cases to improve outcomes and prevent severe vision loss. He advised seeking immediate medical attention in case of sudden or gradual loss of vision, especially with symptoms like flashes of light or floaters. Prompt treatment can significantly influence the result of surgeries for such conditions.

Batallones shared her experience at Thumbay Hospital Ajman, where the doctors quickly diagnosed her condition and provided clear answers. The timely action taken by the medical team saved her from further vision deterioration, preventing complete vision loss. She expressed gratitude for the prompt procedure that improved her eyes significantly. The recovery process was initially painful, but with time, her vision improved, allowing her to see people and objects clearly. The successful outcome of the surgery reiterated the importance of early intervention and proper medical care in preserving vision and preventing complications.

In conclusion, retinal detachment is a serious eye condition that requires immediate medical attention to prevent severe vision loss. The combination of scleral buckling and laser treatment, as in Batallones’ case, can effectively repair a detached retina and restore vision. The experience shared by Batallones emphasizes the importance of seeking medical help at the first signs of vision problems to avoid further complications. With proper intervention and treatment, individuals like Batallones can regain their vision and continue with their daily activities comfortably. If you experience any sudden changes in vision, it is crucial to consult an eye specialist promptly to ensure timely and effective treatment.
