Starting July, social media influencers and companies engaged in advertising without a licence in Abu Dhabi will face penalties, according to the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED). The penalties for violators could amount to Dh10,000 and may even lead to the closure of the companies. The licence fee for individuals is Dh1,250, and for companies, it is Dh5,000. The Department has made it easy to obtain licenses through the Tamm platform by accessing the ‘Department of Economic Development Services’. Foreigners from outside the country can also obtain a licence if they have an Emirates ID card or unified number. The decision will also apply to government companies, and influencers will have to obtain a government licence even if they have permits from the National Media Council.

The Department stated that there are currently 543 licence holders who advertise through websites and social media. Earlier, all licensed businesses in Abu Dhabi were instructed to follow guidelines related to partnerships with social media influencers. Failure to comply with the guidelines may result in closure or fines ranging from Dh3,000 to Dh10,000, as stated by the Department of Economic Development. Companies and individuals engaging in advertising activities through social media platforms in Abu Dhabi must ensure they have the required licences to avoid facing penalties or closure. This new regulation aims to regulate the advertising industry, protect consumers, and ensure fair competition in the market.

Social media influencers play a significant role in promoting products and services to their followers, making them valuable assets for companies seeking to increase brand awareness and reach a wider audience. However, with the increasing influence of social media and the rise of influencer marketing, it has become essential to implement regulations to ensure transparency and accountability in advertising practices. By obtaining a licence, influencers and companies can demonstrate their commitment to complying with the law and promoting ethical advertising standards. This move by the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development aims to create a level playing field for all businesses operating in the emirate and protect consumers from misleading or false advertising.

The process of obtaining a licence through the Tamm platform has been streamlined to make it convenient for individuals and companies to comply with the new regulations. By accessing the ‘Department of Economic Development Services’ on the platform, applicants can easily apply for and acquire the necessary licences for advertising activities. Foreigners residing outside the country can also obtain a licence if they have an Emirates ID card or unified number, ensuring that the regulations apply to all businesses operating within the emirate. The Department’s decision to enforce licensing requirements for social media influencers and advertising companies is a step towards professionalizing the industry and ensuring that all stakeholders operate within the legal framework.

In conclusion, the new regulations announced by the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development will have a significant impact on social media influencers and companies engaged in advertising activities in the emirate. By requiring all businesses to obtain licences for advertising on social media platforms, the Department aims to curb illegal advertising practices, protect consumers from misleading information, and create a fair market environment. It is essential for influencers and companies to adhere to the new regulations to avoid penalties, fines, or closure. By obtaining the necessary licences through the Tamm platform, businesses can demonstrate their commitment to complying with the law and promoting ethical advertising standards. Overall, these regulations will help professionalize the advertising industry in Abu Dhabi and ensure a transparent and accountable advertising environment for all stakeholders.
