The Hamad Medical Corporation’s Tobacco Control Center recently participated in the Katara International Hunting and Falcons Exhibition in Doha, Qatar. The center, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, set up an educational booth with the slogan “Catch It Before It Catches You” to increase awareness about the dangers of tobacco use, especially new tobacco products. They also highlighted their role in supporting individuals who want to quit smoking.

Visitors at the exhibition had the opportunity to receive informational brochures on the importance of quitting smoking to prevent serious health conditions and lead a healthier lifestyle. The center’s team at the booth provided information on effective smoking cessation methods and the services available at the Tobacco Control Center. Smokers attending the exhibition were also able to have their carbon monoxide levels tested.

One of the key focuses of the booth was to shed light on the harmful effects of nicotine pouches, commonly known as Sweika or European snus. These small white pouches containing nicotine and added flavors have a higher nicotine concentration compared to other tobacco products. It is crucial to note that these pouches have not been approved as a smoking cessation aid.

Research indicates that high levels of nicotine can negatively impact certain areas of the brain, and excessive use of nicotine pouches can result in nicotine poisoning. Various health issues associated with the use of these pouches include difficulty concentrating, lethargy, gum irritation, mouth ulcers, nausea, hiccups, and insomnia. The team at the booth aimed to educate visitors about these risks.

The Tobacco Control Center’s outreach efforts at the S’hail 2024 exhibition were well-received by the public, with many showing interest in learning more about the center’s initiatives and the safe and effective methods available for quitting smoking. To access more information about HMC’s Tobacco Control Center and its services, individuals can contact the center directly or visit their location at Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City, Building 311, 3rd Floor.

In conclusion, the participation of the Hamad Medical Corporation’s Tobacco Control Center at the Katara International Hunting and Falcons Exhibition was an important opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and promote smoking cessation. By educating visitors about the risks associated with nicotine pouches and providing information on effective quitting methods, the center played a vital role in empowering individuals to make healthier choices. The positive response from the public reflects a growing interest in tobacco control initiatives and the importance of supporting individuals in their journey towards a smoke-free lifestyle.
