The Czech Republic, known as the third largest grower and exporter of hops in the world, has kicked off its hop picking season on 17 August. This season is expected to last for two weeks, and about 70 per cent of the harvest will be exported, mainly to China and Japan. Despite a reduction in beer production due to COVID-19, there has been an increase in demand for premium beers with higher hop content. The current area of hop farms in the Czech Republic is 4,852 hectares, with the largest area located in the Žatec region, covering 3,718 hectares. The agriculture ministry has reported about 120 registered growers this year, and last year’s harvest yielded 6,997 tonnes of hops.

Hops cultivation in the Czech Republic dates back to the 11th century and has become one of the country’s most traditional and successful crops.
