In a groundbreaking development for animal welfare, the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Musannah is leading the way in combating insect infestations that harm animals. Protex, a student-led initiative, has engineered a natural pesticide to eradicate fleas and insects that commonly afflict animals, offering a safe and sustainable alternative to chemical-based solutions that pose risks to both animals and the environment. Saeed bin Hamad Al Shafei, Executive Director of Protex, emphasized the team’s dedication to creating a solution that outperforms traditional pesticides in effectiveness while ensuring animal safety. The product has undergone rigorous testing in internationally accredited laboratories, with imminent certificates of conformity from regulatory authorities marking a crucial milestone before its market debut.

Omar bin Juma Al Jahdhami, a quality control technician at Protex, highlighted the meticulous manufacturing process currently underway at the university’s facilities in Mussanah. With guidance from the Research Centre for Animal Production in the Wilayat of Barka, the Protex team has achieved a breakthrough through extensive research and experimentation. Abdul Aziz bin Mahmoud Al Abri, a Protex member, shared insights into the company’s journey, which began with eight students pooling their diverse expertise on 3 October, 2023. The team’s efforts have garnered recognition, securing top honors at the South Al Batinah Governorate level of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) awards, and advancing to the second stage of the prestigious INJAZ Oman competition, signaling its potential for wider impact.

With over 56 sales and purchase agreements already in place for their diverse product range, Protex is poised to revolutionize animal care practices, setting a new standard for efficacy and environmental responsibility in pest control. This success story not only showcases the innovative spirit nurtured at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences but also highlights the potential of young Omani talent to drive meaningful change in various sectors. By prioritizing animal welfare and environmental sustainability, Protex is paving the way for a brighter future in pest control solutions.
