Sri Lankan Embassy celebrates Deepavali

The Embassy of Sri Lanka, along with the Sri Lankan Hindu Community in Bahrain, recently celebrated Deepavali at the Chancery premises. Deepavali, also known as the Festival of Lights, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. The event brought together members of the Sri Lankan community in Bahrain to rejoice in this cultural unity. The celebration began with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp and Hindu religious observances led by Mr. Sri Kanesh Alagan. Blessings were invoked for those in attendance, as well as for Sri Lanka and its people.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Bahrain, H.M.G.R.R.K. Wijeratne Mendis, welcomed the guests and expressed warm wishes for peace, happiness, and prosperity for all Sri Lankan Hindus and the broader community in Bahrain. The Ambassador also shared the Deepavali message from H.E. the President of Sri Lanka, emphasizing the importance of harmony, ending divisions, and promoting equality. The message highlighted the need for a cultural existence that embodies compassion and critical thought for all individuals, regardless of privilege or status.

Ms. Madhuka Silva, Minister and Head of Chancery of the Embassy of Sri Lanka, read Hon. Minister Vijitha Herath’s Deepavali message during the event. The message focused on the nation’s journey of revival under the theme ‘Pohosath Ratak, Lassana Jeewithayak’. This theme underscores the importance of unity and progress for a brighter future for Sri Lanka. Overall, the event was a joyous occasion that celebrated the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Sri Lankan Hindu community in Bahrain.

Deepavali, also known as Diwali, is one of the most significant festivals in Hindu culture, celebrated by millions of people around the world. It is a time for families to come together, light lamps, and burst fireworks to signify the triumph of good over evil. The festival is also associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and is a time for prayer and reflection. The celebration in Bahrain brought the Sri Lankan community together to honor these traditions and values.
