Rodri, 28-year-old Spanish midfielder, has won the prestigious Ballon d’Or award for the first time after a successful season with Manchester City and helping Spain win the European Championship. He took over from Lionel Messi as the world’s best football player. On the other hand, Aitana Bonmatí, a 26-year-old Spanish midfielder, retained her women’s Ballon d’Or award after leading Barcelona to victory in the Spanish league, cup, and Champions League. She beat her teammates to complete a 1-2-3 finish for Barcelona.

Vinícius Júnior, Real Madrid and Brazil star, was among the finalists for the men’s award but did not attend the ceremony in Paris. Rodri, who arrived on crutches after suffering an ACL injury last month, clinched the award despite his physical setback. The absence of Vinícius Júnior from the gala was reportedly a decision made by Real Madrid. Neither Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo, who have a combined 13 Ballon d’Or awards between them, were in contention for this year’s prize.

The Ballon d’Or award has been presented since 1956 for men and since 2018 for women. It is decided by journalists from the top 100 countries in the FIFA rankings, with each country’s representative selecting 10 players in ranked order. Points are allotted based on the ranking, and the player with the most points emerges as the winner. Unlike FIFA’s awards, fans are not involved in the voting process for the Ballon d’Or.

Rodri’s recognition as the world’s best player is a testament to his stellar performances for both club and country throughout the season. Aitana Bonmatí’s consistency and excellence on the field secured her second consecutive women’s Ballon d’Or award. The absence of star players like Messi and Ronaldo from the running highlights the emergence of a new generation of talent in the football world. This year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony marked a significant moment in the history of the prestigious award, with deserving winners recognized for their outstanding contributions to the sport.

The Ballon d’Or award ceremony in Paris served as a platform to celebrate the achievements of football’s brightest talents, honoring their dedication and skill on the field. The recognition of both men’s and women’s players reflects the growing popularity and success of women’s football globally. Rodri and Aitana Bonmatí’s victories symbolize the evolving landscape of football, showcasing the diversity and excellence within the sport. As fans anticipate the next season of football, the Ballon d’Or winners will continue to inspire and set new benchmarks for aspiring players worldwide.
