Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto expressed his dissatisfaction with his team’s batting performance at the T20 World Cup, describing it as “unacceptable.” The Tigers secured the final spot in the Super Eights second round stage after narrowly escaping a scare against Nepal, who failed to chase a modest target of 107 runs. Despite being known for their talented stroke players, Bangladesh has struggled with their batting in the tournament, with only one batsman, Towhid Hridoy, making it to the top 20 with 95 runs in four innings.

Former skipper Shakib Al Hasan has been the only player to reach a half-century for Bangladesh so far. In their recent match against group winners South Africa, Bangladesh fell short by just four runs while chasing a low target of 114 runs. Shanto emphasized the need for the batsmen to step up and not rely solely on the bowlers to secure victories. He acknowledged the team’s batting woes and stressed the importance of addressing the issues before the next round of matches.

Despite the batting shortcomings, Bangladesh’s bowlers have been impressive in the tournament, consistently bailing the team out of tough situations. Fast bowler Tanzim Hasan Shakib leads the bowling charts with nine wickets, followed closely by Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed with seven wickets each. Leg-spinner Rishad Hossain, just 21 years old, has also contributed with seven wickets. Shanto praised the bowlers for their performance and emphasized the need for the team to work on minimizing mistakes in the upcoming matches.

Looking ahead to the Super Eights stage, Bangladesh will face tough challenges against Australia and India in Antigua before taking on Afghanistan in Saint Vincent. The team will need to regroup and strategize on how to improve their batting performance to stand a chance against strong opposition. Shanto expressed optimism about the team’s ability to bounce back and learn from their mistakes, highlighting the importance of a collective effort from both batsmen and bowlers. Bangladesh will need to work on their weaknesses and capitalize on their strengths to make a mark in the latter stages of the T20 World Cup.
