Mercedes’ British driver George Russell topped the timesheets in the first practice session ahead of the Formula One British Grand Prix at the Silverstone motor racing circuit in England. Russell edged out his teammate Lewis Hamilton as Mercedes set the pace ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris in a rain-hit third and final free practice session. The three Britons demonstrated their familiarity with the conditions as Mercedes delivered a one-two finish ahead of Norris and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, the series leader, finished fifth ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Russell, who won in Austria last weekend, clocked the fastest time of one minute and 37.529 seconds, outpacing Hamilton by 0.035 seconds. Norris was third, followed by Sainz. The dismal conditions during the practice session provided few clues to the outcome of Sunday’s race, but Mercedes appeared to be in good shape for the qualifying round. The cold, wet weather made it challenging for the drivers and teams to predict the track conditions.

The session began in cold and wet conditions with a brisk wind, making it difficult for the drivers to find grip on the track. Several drivers, including Verstappen and Leclerc, experienced spins and offs due to the lack of traction. Pierre Gasly’s car ended up in the gravel, causing a red flag stoppage. Despite the challenging conditions, the drivers continued to push their limits, with Russell and Hamilton showcasing their skills in the wet weather. As the rain eased, lap times began to improve, with Norris climbing up to third place behind the Mercedes drivers.

The unpredictable weather conditions are expected to continue during the qualifying round, which is likely to impact the final grid positions for the race. With Mercedes showing strong pace in the wet conditions, the battle for pole position is expected to be intense among the top teams. As the British Grand Prix weekend unfolds, fans can expect exciting on-track action and unpredictable outcomes due to the ever-changing weather conditions. Stay tuned for more updates on the Formula One action at Silverstone.
