American driver Seth Quintero and German co-driver Dennis Zenz emerged victorious in the first stage of the Dakar Rally, with Quintero finishing ahead of race favorites while avoiding any major risks to secure a favorable position for the upcoming stages. Quintero was initially not declared the winner, but after recovering 95 seconds lost due to an accident, he was credited with the victory. The stage, which covered 413km around Bisha in Saudi Arabia, saw Quintero cross the finish line 45 seconds ahead of French Mini driver Guerlain Chicherit.

The defending champion Carlos Sainz finished in seventh place, with Nasser Al Attiyah and Sebastien Loeb, both experienced rally champions, sitting in 20th and 22nd place respectively. Loeb mentioned that their goal was not to set the fastest time in this stage but to secure a favorable starting position for the next day, a strategy that many competitors adopted. Al Attiyah also shared that they played it safe, despite facing some challenges like a puncture towards the end of the stage.

The upcoming stages of the Dakar Rally will feature a 48-hour stage in the Empty Quarter, a challenging terrain with vast sand dunes. This stage, introduced last year, will see drivers and riders navigating a special of 1,000km while camping in the desert without any outside help. Opening the road is considered a disadvantage, especially this year as car and motorbike categories will take different routes, preventing drivers from following the faster bikes’ trails.

In the motorbike category, Australia’s Daniel Sanders emerged as the winner of the first stage, taking the lead early on and maintaining his position until the finish line. Defending champion Ricky Brabec and Ross Branch finished just 2 minutes behind Sanders. The Dakar Rally continues to test the skills and strategies of the participants, with each stage presenting unique challenges and obstacles to overcome. The competition remains fierce as drivers and riders push themselves to the limits in pursuit of victory in one of the toughest off-road races in the world.
