Xander Schauffele put on a stellar performance during the first round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. His record-equaling opening round score of nine-under 62 rocketed him to the top of the leaderboard, showcasing his skill and determination after a disappointing loss at the Wells Fargo. Despite ideal scoring conditions, no other player in the field was able to match Schauffele’s impressive performance, with Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala coming closest with six-under 65s.

Even the top-ranked Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, in-form players on the tour, couldn’t keep up with Schauffele’s pace. McIlroy, fresh off back-to-back wins, settled for a solid five-under 66, while Scheffler, with recent victories under his belt, finished with a 67. Schauffele, driven by his previous loss and eagerness to claim his first major victory, made a strong statement with his performance, signaling his intent to end his major championship and tournament-winning droughts.

Schauffele’s remarkable score of 62 matches only two other players who have achieved the same feat at a major tournament. Despite his exceptional performance, Schauffele remains focused on improving and clinching a victory. Meanwhile, McIlroy, although not entirely satisfied with his game, managed to put up a respectable score, emphasizing the importance of consistency throughout the tournament. Scheffler, a new father, also showed signs of his competitive edge, dispelling any doubts about his form after a brief break.

Defending champion Brooks Koepka, aiming to become the first repeat winner in the tournament since 2019, proved to be a strong contender with a solid 67. Even golf legend Tiger Woods, making his return to competitive play after the Masters, had a respectable showing with a one-over 72. Despite a challenging finish to his round, Woods remains optimistic about his progress and potential in the tournament.

The leaderboard after the first round showcased an exciting mix of talent, with Schauffele leading the pack at nine-under, followed by Finau, Theegala, and Hubbard at six-under. A host of players, including McIlroy, Macintyre, Hoge, Kim, Detry, Morikawa, and Mcnealy, tied at five-under, setting the stage for an intense competition in the subsequent rounds. As the tournament unfolds, golf fans can expect thrilling battles and captivating performances from the world’s best players as they vie for the prestigious PGA Championship title.
