Gareth Southgate, the England manager, announced his resignation following England’s loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Prince William praised Southgate for his humility, compassion, and leadership under intense pressure. Southgate’s successor is rumored to be Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, or Mauricio Pochettino. Despite not winning a trophy, Southgate is credited with bringing pride and success to the team.

Southgate took over as England manager in 2016 when the team was struggling, leading them to three semi-finals and two European Championship finals. Before his appointment, England had only reached three major tournament semi-finals and one final in their history. Southgate’s tenure was marked by a strong foundation for future success, but he was unable to secure a trophy for the team.

Although England showed resilience in Euro 2024, they were not able to clinch the title. Southgate faced criticism during the tournament, but he leaves behind a talented squad of young players. The future looks promising with players like Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, and Declan Rice, who will be in their prime for the 2026 World Cup.

Southgate’s overall record as England manager was 61 wins in 102 matches. He ranks third in all-time victories and leaves behind a core group of players who played in the Euro 2024 final. The process for appointing Southgate’s successor is underway, with no rushed decision expected before England’s next match against the Republic of Ireland.

Overall, Gareth Southgate’s resignation marks the end of an era for English football. Despite not securing a trophy, he is praised for transforming the team and instilling a sense of pride. His successor will have big shoes to fill as they look to continue the success that Southgate brought to the national team.
