A recent power outage in the southern city of Sharurah in Saudi Arabia has led to the dismissal of several senior officials. The outage prompted the Saudi Electricity Regulatory Authority (SERA) to launch an urgent investigation into the incident and the delay in restoring power. The investigation, conducted under SERA’s supervision with the help of independent technical consultancy firms, revealed a malfunction in a circuit breaker that was caused by a lack of maintenance and failure of protection devices. As a result, the Saudi Electricity Company’s (SEC) Board of Directors made the decision to dismiss a senior executive and three managers for their negligence and failure to fulfill their responsibilities.

Following the dismissal of the officials, Eng. Abdulrahman Al-Amoudi has been appointed as the Executive Vice President for Generation Activities, Eng. Saad Al Shahrani as Head of the Southern Power Generation Operations Sector, Eng. Mohammed Al Shahrani as Director of the Department of Gas Stations for Power Generation in the Southern Sector, and Eng. Ali Al Kathiri as Director of the Sharourah Power Plant. Additionally, the board approved the implementation of technical measures to address the issues that led to the power outage, including maintenance programs and a review of protection devices at the plant. The board has also committed to implementing all directives from SERA, ensuring the readiness of all power generation stations and electricity networks across the Kingdom.

The Saudi Electricity Company’s focus on addressing the power outage and improving service delivery in Sharurah highlights the importance of preventative maintenance and the need for accountability within the organization. By taking swift action in response to the outage and implementing technical measures to prevent future incidents, the company is demonstrating its commitment to providing reliable electricity services to its customers in the region. The appointment of new officials to key positions within the company shows a dedication to enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring that the necessary steps are taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The dismissal of senior officials in response to the power outage in Sharurah serves as a reminder of the critical role that maintenance and oversight play in ensuring the reliability of electricity services. By identifying the root causes of the outage and implementing technical measures to address the issues, the Saudi Electricity Company is taking proactive steps to prevent similar incidents from happening again. The company’s commitment to implementing all directives from SERA and ensuring accountability within the organization underscores its dedication to providing high-quality electricity services to its customers across the Kingdom.

Moving forward, the Saudi Electricity Company will continue to monitor the readiness of its power generation stations and electricity networks, with the assistance of independent technical consultancy firms. By overseeing the implementation of recommendations from the review of the company’s summer 2024 plan and addressing any deficiencies in service delivery, the company is working towards improving the reliability and efficiency of its operations. With a focus on accountability and continuous improvement, the Saudi Electricity Company is positioning itself to better serve its customers and ensure the stable supply of electricity in the region.
