Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka and Casper Ruud had an impressive start at the French Open on Tuesday with dominant victories in their first-round matches. Despite the cold, rainy weather limiting play on the outer courts, the two main showcourts, Philippe Chatrier and Suzanne Lenglen, provided some exciting action. Sabalenka, who reached the semifinals last year, breezed past Russian teenager Erika Andreeva, while Ruud, twice runner-up, defeated Brazilian qualifier Felipe Alves in straight sets.

Ruud, currently ranked number seven in the world, expressed his excitement for the tournament, hoping to make it “another good year” after disappointing results in the past. Sabalenka, who recently defended her Australian Open title, is looking to make history by winning both Melbourne and Paris in the same year. Despite the pressure, she remains focused on taking it step by step and fighting for every point in the tournament.

Sabalenka’s strong performance on court Philippe Chatrier showcased her form and confidence heading into the tournament as a top contender for the title. She quickly gained the upper hand against Andreeva, breaking early in the match and controlling the game with her powerful forehand shots. After securing the first set, Sabalenka continued her dominance in the second set, closing out the match in just 68 minutes with a well-executed drop shot at the net.

The Belarusian player reflected on her improved touch game during the match, noting that her practice is finally paying off on the court. Looking ahead, Sabalenka will face either Irene Burillo Escorihuela or Moyuka Uchijima in the next round, as she aims to continue her winning streak in the tournament. Other notable results from the day included Elena Rybakina’s victory over Greet Minnen and Alex De Minaur’s strong performance against Alex Michelsen.

As the tournament progresses, players like Dan Evans and Katie Boulter will seek to extend their stays in the singles draws, facing tough opponents in Holger Rune and Paula Badosa. Despite the challenging weather conditions at Roland Garros, the competition remains fierce and exciting for both players and spectators alike. With standout performances from Sabalenka, Ruud, and other contenders, the French Open promises to deliver thrilling matches and memorable moments in the days to come.
