The Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva and Doha International Family Institute (DIFI) recently collaborated on a side event focusing on family empowerment and protection in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the International Year of the Family. The event took place during the 56th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva and was attended by ambassadors, diplomats, international and non-governmental organization employees, as well as experts from around the world.

Discussions during the event centered around the crucial role that families play in promoting development, social cohesion, integration, and values preservation. Participants also delved into the various concepts and patterns that are shaping the modern family landscape, posing challenges to its traditional image and overall existence. Furthermore, the conversation touched upon the impact of factors such as climate change, migration, and advancements in technology on the family structure, highlighting both positive and negative effects.

One of the key highlights of the event was the recognition of the need for collaborative action and concerted efforts in the realms of law and practice to bolster the role of the family and enhance its contribution to societal stability and security. The discussions shed light on the complexities and threats faced by the family unit in today’s rapidly evolving world, underlining the importance of safeguarding and nurturing this foundational institution.

An important announcement made during the event was regarding the upcoming international conference hosted by the State of Qatar to mark the 30th anniversary of the International Year of the Family. Scheduled to take place from October 29-31, the conference will be organized by DIFI under the theme “Family and Contemporary Megatrends,” aiming to explore the intersection of family dynamics with the major global trends shaping our societies today.

The event underscored the significance of embracing a holistic approach to family empowerment and protection, recognizing the multifaceted challenges and opportunities that families encounter in the modern world. By bringing together diverse stakeholders and experts in the field, the event served as a platform for meaningful dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration towards strengthening the family as a fundamental unit of society.

In conclusion, the side event on family empowerment and protection organized by the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar and Doha International Family Institute showcased a commitment to advancing the well-being and resilience of families worldwide. As discussions continue to evolve and initiatives like the upcoming international conference take shape, the focus remains on fostering a supportive environment for families to thrive amidst the complexities of contemporary life.
