Qatar hosts event discussing security lessons learned from World Cup 2022

The Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations recently organized an event at the United Nations headquarters in New York during the United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2024). Titled “Global Security Lessons from FIFA World Cup 2022: Insights and Applications for International Peacekeeping,” the event aimed to share Qatar’s successful experience in organizing the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and emphasize the importance of ensuring the safety and security of participants and fans. In her opening speech, H E Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations, highlighted Qatar’s support for initiatives such as the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism’s “Global Programme on the Security of Major Sporting Events” and the hosting of the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS).
One of the key highlights of the event was Qatar’s successful organization of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, where safety and security were top priorities for event organizers. Qatar’s efforts to support global initiatives such as the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism’s “Global Programme on the Security of Major Sporting Events, and Promotion of Sport and its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism” were also emphasized. Additionally, the hosting of the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS) in Doha was highlighted as an independent organization dedicated to addressing challenges and threats facing the world of sport. Through these initiatives, Qatar has demonstrated its commitment to promoting safety and security in major sporting events and preventing violent extremism.
The event was attended by various government representatives participating in the UN Chiefs of Police Summit 2024, providing them with valuable insights into Qatar’s experience in securing one of the world’s largest sporting events. The exchange of experiences and best practices at the event facilitated discussions on ways to enhance cooperation with security institutions and governments. By sharing its expertise in event security and peacekeeping, Qatar aims to contribute to global efforts to ensure the safety and security of major international events and promote peace.
