Proposed Legislation to Increase Penalties for Driving on Road Shoulders

A proposal has been introduced to the House of Representatives in Bahrain to increase penalties for drivers who use the road shoulder, also known as the yellow line. The proposal suggests imprisonment of up to six months and/or a fine ranging from BD 50 to BD 500 for such violations. This penalty would not override any stricter penalties outlined in other laws. The proposal aims to address the significant number of traffic accidents caused by illegal use of the emergency lane, leading to injuries and fatalities.

The proposal, put forward by Maryam Al Dhain and referred to the Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee, aligns with Article 1/20 of the Bahraini Constitution which states that no crime or punishment should exist without a corresponding law. Al Dhain emphasized the need for stronger deterrence to prevent reckless driving behavior, proposing that driving on the shoulder be punished with the same severity as street racing. The current penalties are seen as insufficient to effectively deter drivers from engaging in dangerous behavior on the roads.

The proposal seeks to tackle the growing issue of reckless driving and ensure the safety of all road users. The committee will review the proposal before it goes to the full parliament for debate and potential enactment. With the increasing number of traffic accidents caused by illegal use of the road shoulder, the need for stricter penalties to deter such behavior is becoming more apparent.
