The Ministry of Education in Oman, along with the Scientific College of Design, has initiated the ‘Young Crafters’ programme to train students in traditional Omani crafts using modern technology. The programme started last week with 30 students from Muscat Governorate participating. This vocational training project aims to equip students with technical skills that not only preserve their cultural heritage but also contribute to the local and global markets.
The Young Crafters programme seeks to generate interest in crafts and traditional industries while empowering students to train others in the art of handicrafts. The training covers a variety of skills including metal shaping, pottery, ceramics, artistic works, graphic design, and photography. Professors from the Scientific College of Design specializing in these fields conduct the workshops. According to Ahmed Al-Sabhani, a senior educational researcher, the programme consists of interactive workshops where students learn under the guidance of experienced trainers.
The programme is divided into two parts with the first focusing on graphic design using popular programs like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, as well as advertising photography. Students are split into two groups and rotate between the workshops for two weeks. The second part of the programme involves training students in skills such as artistic works, metal shaping, ceramics making, and pottery. Students are grouped according to their preferences and interests, with a focus on enhancing their chosen skills.
The core objective of the Young Crafters programme is to uphold the cultural heritage of Omani crafts, instill a sense of national identity and pride among students, and align with Oman Vision 2040’s goals. One of the key priorities of this vision is supporting citizens in various industries and enhancing students’ abilities to apply modern technology in craft industries. By expanding students’ horizons and fostering awareness of entrepreneurship, the programme aims to prepare them for the evolving demands of the market.
