Oman is seeking support from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) to help preserve the quality and reputation of Omani frankincense and increase its marketing value. The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion in Oman participated in the 65th meeting of WIPO member states’ associations in Geneva, led by Dr. Saleh Said Masan. Masan emphasized Oman’s cooperation with WIPO on various projects to strengthen the intellectual property system in the country, including the implementation of the “National Intellectual Property Strategy”.

The Sultanate of Oman is focused on enhancing innovation and protecting intellectual property rights through collaboration with WIPO. The country has seen significant progress, advancing 10 ranks in the Global Innovation Index in 2023 compared to the previous year. Masan highlighted the importance of the “Treaty on Genetic Resources and Related Traditional Knowledge” in safeguarding precious resources and the support WIPO provides to indigenous peoples and local communities in securing fair access to benefits from these resources.

During the meeting, Masan also addressed the Israeli attacks on Palestinian tangible and intangible heritage, expressing concern over the suffering of the Palestinian people. He urged WIPO member states’ associations to take action to hold the perpetrators of these crimes accountable. The devastating impact of the Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people, including men, women, children, health institutions, and educational institutions, is a grave violation of human rights that requires international attention and intervention.

Oman’s efforts to engage with WIPO highlight the country’s commitment to protecting intellectual property rights and promoting innovation. By seeking support from WIPO, Oman aims to preserve the quality and reputation of Omani frankincense, as well as enhance the marketing value of this valuable resource. Through collaboration with WIPO, Oman is working towards implementing a comprehensive framework to ensure the protection of intellectual property rights in the country, including the development of the “National Intellectual Property Strategy”.

The significant progress made by Oman in the Global Innovation Index demonstrates the country’s dedication to fostering innovation and promoting intellectual property rights. Oman’s focus on enhancing intellectual property rights for precious resources, such as frankincense, reflects the country’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage and natural resources. By addressing the Israeli attacks on Palestinian heritage, Oman is advocating for justice and accountability for the victims of these atrocities, highlighting the importance of respecting and protecting cultural heritage and human rights globally.

Overall, Oman’s participation in the WIPO meeting underscores the country’s active engagement in international efforts to strengthen intellectual property rights, promote innovation, and protect cultural heritage. Through collaboration with WIPO and other international organizations, Oman is working towards enhancing the quality and value of its natural resources, while advocating for justice and accountability for communities affected by conflicts and human rights violations.
