Belgium’s Lebanese ambassador Fadi Hajali has spoken out against Israel’s recent attacks on Lebanon, calling them an “existential threat” and accusing Israel of targeting civilians and violating human rights. In an interview with Euronews, Hajali expressed concern over the high number of casualties resulting from the Israeli bombardment and called on the international community to intervene to help resolve the conflict. European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell has also expressed fear of a “full-blown war” and called for an immediate ceasefire.

Despite the condemnation of Israeli actions by Borrell and the EU, no sanctions against Israel have been announced. Hajali expressed gratitude for the EU’s economic and humanitarian support to Lebanon but urged the EU to consider imposing sanctions on Israel or reevaluating their relationship with the country. He emphasized that the conflict extends beyond attacks on militant groups like Hezbollah and is a war against the Lebanese people as a whole. Hajali stressed the importance of ending the aggression and standing united against it.

Israeli Defence Forces have claimed to have targeted dozens of Hezbollah group’s locations in response to their attacks on northern Israel. However, Hajali argued that the Israeli attacks are not limited to militant groups but are also aimed at the entire population of Lebanon. He called for an immediate end to the conflict, stating that continued Israeli aggression will only further unite the Lebanese people in denouncing it. Hajali’s plea for international intervention and support in ending the conflict reflects the urgent need to address the escalating tensions and violence in the region.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Lebanon has resulted in a devastating number of casualties and has raised concerns about a potential full-scale war. The international community, including the European Union, has condemned Israel’s actions but has yet to take concrete actions such as imposing sanctions. Hajali’s call for sanctions and a reevaluation of the EU’s relationship with Israel underscores the severity of the situation and the need for a strong response to end the violence. As the conflict continues to escalate, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians and work towards a peaceful resolution.

Hajali’s accusations against Israel for targeting civilians and violating human rights highlight the gravity of the situation in Lebanon. The indiscriminate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure have resulted in a significant loss of life and widespread destruction. Hajali’s plea for international intervention and support demonstrates the urgent need for action to end the conflict and prevent further harm to the Lebanese people. The international community must act swiftly to address the escalating tensions and violence in the region and work towards a lasting peace that respects the rights and lives of all individuals involved. Only through collective efforts and decisive actions can the conflict be resolved and the well-being of the Lebanese people ensured.
