President Sheikh Mohamed of the UAE recently presented Indonesian President Joko Widodo with a Zayed Medal during a state visit reception. The two leaders witnessed the announcement of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two countries. These agreements included the installation of solar energy systems in Indonesia, public budget management, cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, as well as the establishment of the Mohamed Bin Zayed-Joko Widodo Mangrove Research Centre in Bali, among others.

One of the significant agreements signed during the visit was between Indonesia’s ministry of state-owned enterprises and UAE-based property company Eagle Hills. This preliminary agreement outlined a $3 billion deal for the development of hotels, airports, and tourism destinations in Indonesia. While specifics of the projects and their value were not disclosed, key aspects of the agreement included infrastructure enhancements at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The MoU will last for a year with the possibility of extension through joint agreement.

The collaboration between the two nations also extends to financial and economic sectors, with agreements signed between the Central Bank of the UAE and the Central Bank of Indonesia regarding smart systems, as well as an MoU between the Dubai International Financial Centre and the Nusantara Capital Authority. The framework agreement on maritime patrol aircraft highlights a commitment to enhancing security and cooperation in the region. The agreements signed are expected to pave the way for increased investment, tourism, and economic growth between the UAE and Indonesia.

The establishment of the Mohamed Bin Zayed-Joko Widodo Mangrove Research Centre in Bali marks a significant step towards environmental conservation and sustainability. Through this partnership, both countries aim to conduct research and studies on mangrove ecosystems, which play a crucial role in coastal protection and biodiversity conservation. The initiative reflects a shared commitment to environmental protection and the sustainable development of natural resources.

The $3 billion deal for the development of tourism infrastructure in Indonesia underscores the potential for economic growth and investment opportunities in the Southeast Asian country. The collaboration between Indonesia’s ministry of state-owned enterprises and Eagle Hills Properties is expected to create jobs, boost tourism, and enhance the country’s infrastructure. The flexible implementation timeline allows for strategic planning and ensures the successful execution of the investment plan.

Overall, the state visit of President Joko Widodo to the UAE has strengthened the bonds between the two nations and opened up avenues for collaboration in various sectors. The signing of multiple agreements and MoUs demonstrates a mutual commitment to enhancing economic, cultural, and environmental cooperation. The partnership between the UAE and Indonesia holds great promise for the future, with potential benefits for both countries and the region as a whole.
