In September 2024, the Government of India took significant steps to enhance the country’s defence capabilities and strategic position in the global landscape. The Defence Acquisition Council approved 10 capital acquisition proposals worth Rs 145 billion, including Future-Ready Combat Vehicles (FRCVs) and Project 17B stealth frigates for the Indian Navy valued at Rs 700 billion. The Cabinet Committee on Security also cleared a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the supply of 240 units of AL-31FP jet engines for the Indian Air Force. Additionally, a budget of Rs 227.5 billion was approved for upcoming space missions, showcasing India’s ambitions in space exploration.

Naval advancements were also a focus in September, with Cochin Shipyard launching anti-submarine warfare shallow watercraft for the Indian Navy. The Ministry of Defence approved the construction of extra-large unmanned underwater vehicles for the Navy, with a budget of Rs 25 billion. Strategic collaborations were prominent, with Bharat Electronics Limited forming a joint venture with Israel Aerospace Industries for maintenance services and India signing an agreement with the South African Navy for submarine rescue assistance. PTC Industries also secured an order to supply titanium cast components to Israel Aerospace Industries.

The month also saw finalizations of contracts and new orders, reflecting India’s ongoing modernization efforts in defence. Dassault Aviation announced plans for an MRO facility for Rafale and Mirage fighter jets near Noida, while the DRDO awarded a contract to MTAR Technologies for the manufacture of combustors for air-breathing engines. India’s rise to the third-largest power in the Asia Power Index, surpassing Japan, highlights its increasing economic and military influence in the region. Domestic defence manufacturing achieved milestones with export orders for medium machine guns and indigenous drone technology for the Indian Army.

Overall, September 2024 was a month of significant developments in India’s defence sector, showcasing the government’s commitment to enhancing military capabilities and advancing strategic partnerships. With investments in modernization projects, space exploration, naval advancements, and strategic collaborations, India is solidifying its position as a key player in the global defence landscape.
