Smart home technology company Quilt has launched a new three-zone heat pump system designed to maintain high efficiency even in extreme temperatures. The new unit, unveiled Tuesday, allows a single outdoor unit to power three indoor heads, simplifying installations and reducing exterior footprint. This launch follows a recent $20 million Series B funding round aimed at expanding the company’s sales and development efforts.

Addressing Low-Speed Compressor ChallengesFuture Expansion and Product Development

The introduction of this three-zone system marks a significant step for Quilt, a startup differentiating itself through extensive data collection and analysis from its installed heat pump units. This data-driven approach has allowed the company to innovate beyond traditional HVAC limitations, offering performance improvements through over-the-air software updates and now, a fundamentally redesigned multi-zone system.

Quilt’s Data-Driven Approach to Heat Pump Innovation

Unlike many manufacturers who rely on limited lab testing, Quilt leverages real-world performance data gathered from its existing customer base. According to Quilt co-founder and CTO Matthew Knoll, this allows for continuous optimization and identification of edge cases that would otherwise be missed. This approach is central to their ability to overcome challenges common in multi-zone heat pump systems.

Addressing Low-Speed Compressor Challenges

A key issue with multi-zone heat pumps is maintaining efficiency at low heating or cooling demands. Compressors can become unstable at very low speeds, forcing systems to cycle on and off, reducing efficiency and comfort. Quilt’s engineers addressed this by utilizing the data collected from over a thousand installed units to understand real-world operating conditions.

The company’s solution involves a larger copper coil and a correspondingly smaller compressor. This combination, along with other design refinements, enables Quilt’s system to deliver approximately 90% of its rated capacity – 27,000 BTUs – even at -13˚ F (-25˚ C) without compromising low-demand performance. Quilt claims this makes it the most efficient three-zone mini-split currently available.

Enhanced Efficiency and Individual Zone Control

Beyond overall capacity, Quilt’s new system focuses on granular control and minimizing energy waste. Each indoor head can independently deliver between 2,210 BTUs of heat and 1,570 BTUs of cooling. Even when heating or cooling isn’t required in a specific zone, refrigerant continues to circulate, but the system’s low-speed performance limits heat release to around 300 BTUs in heating mode – comparable to the heat generated by a human body.

This level of individual zone control is a key benefit of mini-split systems, offering homeowners greater flexibility and potential energy savings compared to traditional central air systems. The increased efficiency of the new Quilt unit further enhances these advantages, potentially lowering utility bills and reducing carbon footprints. The company is also positioning itself within the growing market for energy-efficient HVAC solutions.

Additionally, the simplified installation process offered by the three-zone unit could appeal to contractors and homeowners alike. Reducing the number of outdoor units needed for larger homes can lower installation costs and minimize aesthetic impact.

Future Expansion and Product Development

While Quilt has not disclosed specific details about future product plans, Knoll indicated the company aims to offer solutions for a wider range of homes. The continued collection and analysis of performance data will likely play a crucial role in guiding future development efforts. The company’s success hinges on maintaining its data advantage and translating those insights into innovative home heating and cooling solutions.

Looking ahead, the industry will be watching to see how Quilt scales its production and distribution to meet anticipated demand. The company’s ability to maintain its performance edge while expanding its product line will be critical to its long-term success in the competitive HVAC market. Further announcements regarding new product releases and expansion plans are expected in the coming months.
