The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) in Bahrain is set to construct a state-of-the-art seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant on Hawar Island. Known as the “New Hawar SWRO Desalination Plant,” this facility will be strategically positioned on the southeastern coast of the country. With a capacity to produce between one and two million gallons per day (MIGD) of potable water, the plant will play a crucial role in meeting Bahrain’s increasing water demands.

The New Hawar SWRO Desalination Plant will boast an advanced desalination system, two ground storage tanks each capable of holding one million gallons, and forwarding pumps for efficient water distribution. This project will be undertaken under an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract, highlighting the complexity and scale of the development. The plant is expected to significantly enhance Bahrain’s water resources and support the sustainable growth of the Kingdom.

Several leading contractors have shown interest in bidding for the upcoming tender to construct the New Hawar SWRO Desalination Plant. These include Mohammed A Al Kharafi & Sons for General Trading General Contracting and Industrial Structures WLL, ALPHA Energy Generations Co. W.L.L, TECTON Engineering and Construction Branch Office, ALMOAYYED Contracting W.L.L, and China Machinery Engineering Corporation. These firms will compete to bring this critical infrastructure project to life, further demonstrating Bahrain’s dedication to improving its water supply capabilities and ensuring a secure source of clean water for its residents.

The construction of the New Hawar SWRO Desalination Plant is part of Bahrain’s ongoing efforts to address the challenges posed by water scarcity in the region. With the plant set to produce up to two million gallons of potable water per day, it will play a crucial role in meeting the increasing water needs of the Kingdom. The advanced desalination technology employed in the plant will ensure the production of high-quality drinking water for the residents of Bahrain.

By strategically locating the New Hawar SWRO Desalination Plant on the southeastern coast of Bahrain, the Electricity and Water Authority aims to optimize the distribution of potable water to the areas with the highest demand. The presence of two ground storage tanks with a one-million-gallon capacity each will provide a reliable storage solution for the water produced by the plant, ensuring continuous and uninterrupted water supply to the residents of the Kingdom.

The successful completion of the New Hawar SWRO Desalination Plant will mark a significant milestone in Bahrain’s efforts to enhance its water infrastructure and support its sustainable development goals. With leading contracting firms vying for the opportunity to be part of this important project, Bahrain is poised to strengthen its water supply capabilities and ensure a reliable source of clean water for its growing population. The construction of this cutting-edge desalination plant will not only boost Bahrain’s water resources but also contribute to the overall economic and social development of the Kingdom.
