The IDL allows motorists to drive in other countries without further tests or applications. It acts as a translation of your local driving license and is valid for one year. In case of accidental vehicle damage or loss of legal identification abroad, the IDL provides protection. Recognized globally in 10 languages, it facilitates communication with law enforcement and authorities in other countries.
Obtaining an IDL is a straightforward process that can be done through various portals in the UAE. Required documents include an IDL form, passport, valid residency, Emirates ID, copy of a valid UAE license, and two passport photos. The fees for obtaining an IDL are Dh177, plus Dh20 Knowledge and Innovation fees. Online applications are processed within three working days, while over-the-counter applications can be completed in half an hour.
To apply for an IDL through the RTA website, customers need to verify their identity with an OTP sent to their registered phone number. After settling the required fees, customers receive a digital international driving license within two working days. The original copy of the license can be obtained either at the Customer Happiness Centre or through a courier company with additional charges for different delivery options.
It is essential to remember that the IDL needs to be obtained before traveling, and it is valid for one year, requiring renewal upon expiry. The IDL is different from the driving permit in the UAE, where a valid local license is mandatory.
