Asir, a region in Saudi Arabia, has emerged as a leader in cultural tourism, attracting over 541,000 visitors to its museums and art galleries in 2023. This information was revealed in the 2023 Cultural Status Report published by the Ministry of Culture, highlighting Asir’s high standing in the sector. The region’s success in cultural tourism can be attributed to its abundance of private museums and centers that showcase traditional crafts such as Asir cat arts, traditional industries, and honey production. Asir’s cultural tourism boom reflects the vibrant and unique cultural components of Saudi Arabia’s southern regions.

In addition to leading in the number of local trips that included visits to cultural sites, Asir also ranked second in market share indicators for local and incoming tourist trips with cultural activities. The Cultural Tourism Index highlighted the economic impact of cultural tourism, shedding light on the relationship between culture and tourism. The report showcased the attractiveness of cultural resources and services to tourists and their contribution to economic activity through market share analysis of local and inbound tourist trips that include cultural activities.

The growth of cultural tourism in 2023 was evident with approximately 35.2 million local and inbound tourists participating in cultural activities, a significant increase from 2022. Inbound cultural tourism saw a surge with about 13.77 million incoming tourists, representing a growth rate exceeding 145% compared to the previous year. This increase in inbound cultural tourism accounted for about 50% of all inbound tourist trips in 2023, surpassing domestic cultural tourism which constituted 26.13% of total domestic tourist trips. The report attributed this growth to regulatory developments in the tourism sector, including the approval of the tourism system, updated visit visa regulations for tourism, and the development and rehabilitation of historical sites.

The continuous growth in inbound cultural tourism aligns with the trend observed since the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic started to recede in 2021. The report emphasized the importance of cultural resources and services in attracting tourists and boosting economic activity in the region. Asir’s success in cultural tourism can be seen as a testament to the region’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage and promoting cultural activities for both local and international visitors. With its diverse offerings in museums, art galleries, and traditional craft centers, Asir has established itself as a must-visit destination for cultural enthusiasts.

The 2023 Cultural Status Report serves as a benchmark for assessing the impact of cultural tourism on the region and the country as a whole. Asir’s leadership in the sector showcases the potential for growth and development in cultural tourism in Saudi Arabia. The report’s findings highlight the importance of cultural attractions in driving tourism and boosting economic activity, emphasizing the need for continued investment in cultural preservation and promotion. Asir’s success in cultural tourism is a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage and its ability to attract visitors with its unique offerings and experiences. With continued support and development, Asir is poised to further solidify its position as a top cultural tourism destination in Saudi Arabia.
