The recent meeting of the United Nations General Assembly Presidents Council in Doha concluded with the adoption of the “Doha Declaration,” which addressed several urgent issues in the world, with a particular focus on the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. President of the UNGA H E Nassir bin Abdulaziz Al Nasser highlighted the importance of the United Nations in addressing global crises and emphasized Qatar’s commitment to enhancing international peace, security, and mutual understanding.
The Doha Declaration called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, increased humanitarian aid, and efforts to address the Palestinian issue in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions. It also called for the recognition of the Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. The UNGA Presidents urged the Secretary-General to propose a comprehensive peace initiative based on the two-state solution and to develop an action plan to implement it.
In addition to the Gaza crisis, the meeting also discussed the ongoing conflict in Sudan and the need for the international community to support the UN’s efforts to respond effectively to the humanitarian situation there. The Ukrainian crisis, climate change, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and the upcoming UN General Assembly session in September were also on the agenda.
H E Al Nasser highlighted the need to amend and restructure the UN Charter to address the changing global landscape since its adoption in 1945. He praised Qatar and its leadership for their important role in resolving conflicts and disputes through various mediations at regional and global levels. Qatar’s support for the UN’s work in various fields, including its assistance to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, was also recognized.
