The Qatar Calendar House (QCH) astronomical observation team and astrophotographers recently had an exciting opportunity to observe the Orion Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy from the Sudanthile region in Qatar. During their observation, they also viewed the Andromeda Galaxy, witnessed numerous meteor showers, and observed various star constellations. This event was organized by Ali Abo Ras and supported by Dr. Bashir Marzouq, an astronomical expert at QCH. The team traveled about 70 minutes from Doha to Sudanthile for the best visibility of the galaxy.
Ahmed Raslan, a Doha-based astrophotographer, shared details about the observation event, mentioning that they were able to observe the Orion Arm of the Milky Way, multiple meteor showers, the Andromeda Galaxy, and summer star constellations. The event provided a platform for enthusiasts to gather and observe celestial phenomena under expert guidance. Participants were able to view celestial objects with the naked eye as well as through astronomical instruments.
According to Raslan, such observation events are regularly organized in Qatar, either by QCH or other astronomy enthusiasts. QCH even has a winter camp located next to Sudanthile where events take place from September to April every year. The current period offers optimal conditions for observing the Milky Way in the early morning sky, with the galactic center and parts of the Orion Arm visible from locations free of light pollution.
Looking ahead, Raslan mentioned that there is another observation event planned at the end of the current Hijri month, as the moon will not be shining, creating a dark enough night sky for clear observation. This highlights the ongoing interest in and opportunities for observing celestial phenomena in Qatar, providing enthusiasts with chances to explore the wonders of the night sky.
Overall, the Qatar Calendar House astronomical observation team and astrophotographers had a successful observation event in the Sudanthile region, where they were able to view the Orion Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy, the Andromeda Galaxy, meteor showers, and star constellations. With regular events organized in the country, enthusiasts have the chance to participate in such activities and learn more about the fascinating world of astronomy. As interest in astronomy continues to grow, opportunities for observation and exploration of the night sky will likely increase, offering even more chances for discovery and wonder.
