The Cultural Village Foundation – Katara recently unveiled an exhibition titled “Migrants” by Saudi fine artist Saleh Alqasem in Building 18, which will be on display until September 14. The opening of the exhibition was attended by notable figures such as Katara General Manager Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the State of Qatar H H Prince Mansour bin Khalid bin Farhan Al Saud, as well as representatives from various diplomatic missions, art enthusiasts, and artists.

Showcasing a collection of 30 paintings, Alqasem’s exhibition explores the theme of migration through impressionistic, abstract, and expressionist styles. The artist utilizes colors and shapes to evoke feelings of nostalgia for the past, a deep-rooted connection to nature, and a profound love for a particular place. These elements come together to create visually captivating pieces that transcend language barriers and cultural differences, allowing viewers to connect on a universal level.

Dr. Al Sulaiti emphasized the significance of Alqasem’s exhibition within the context of Katara’s commitment to showcasing diverse and distinctive art exhibitions. He highlighted the foundation’s mission to enrich the local and regional arts and cultural scenes through initiatives like this, which serve as a platform for artists to share their unique perspectives and narratives with a wider audience. Al Sulaiti also stressed the role of Katara in fostering cultural exchange and understanding through the arts, emphasizing the power of fine arts as a form of expression that transcends words.

In his remarks at the opening of the exhibition, Alqasem expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to showcase his work at Katara and to share his personal experiences of migration through art. He explained that each painting in the collection is a reflection of his journey as a migrant, capturing moments of longing, resilience, and hope in a new and unfamiliar environment. Alqasem’s use of different artistic styles and techniques adds layers of complexity and richness to his work, inviting viewers to explore the emotional depth and complexity of the migrant experience.

The exhibition “Migrants” serves as a reminder of the universal nature of migration and the shared human experiences that transcend borders and boundaries. Through his art, Alqasem invites viewers to reflect on the challenges and opportunities that come with migration, while highlighting the resilience and strength of individuals who navigate unfamiliar terrain in search of a better future. By offering a glimpse into his personal journey, Alqasem encourages empathy, understanding, and solidarity with migrants around the world, fostering a sense of connection and compassion among viewers.

As the exhibition continues its run at Katara until September 14, visitors have the opportunity to engage with Alqasem’s evocative paintings and delve into the complex themes of migration, belonging, and identity that he explores through his art. By providing a platform for artists like Alqasem to share their stories and perspectives, Katara reaffirms its commitment to promoting cultural exchange and dialogue, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the diverse narratives that shape our collective human experience.
