Amir establishes National Planning Council, replacing the PSA

Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar recently issued a series of landmark decisions to establish the National Planning Council, marking the beginning of a new era in the nation’s strategic and developmental planning. The council will be headed by the Prime Minister, with various ministers and officials making up its membership. This institution is set to play a pivotal role in steering Qatar’s strategic trajectory, with a focus on crafting and refining national development visions, strategies, and plans.

The General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers emphasized the significance of these decisions, highlighting the council’s role in enhancing strategic foresight and aligning Qatar with global developments. The council’s mandate includes overseeing the implementation of Qatar National Vision 2030, formulating development strategies, and monitoring progress in national development strategies. It will also play a key role in economic development and diversification strategies to boost Qatar’s competitiveness.

Amiri Decision No. 15 of 2024 appoints H E Abdulaziz bin Nasser bin Mubarak Al Khalifa as the Secretary-General of the National Planning Council, responsible for overseeing the council’s operations, finances, and technical aspects. The establishment of the National Statistics Center within the council is mandated to provide official statistics and lead statistical initiatives in Qatar. Ministries and governmental agencies are required to adhere to the policies of the council and collaborate in its areas of expertise.

The National Planning Council will work closely with the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers and other stakeholders to advance national development in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. The council’s responsibilities also include endorsing proactive plans and risk management frameworks to prepare for future contingencies and monitor Qatar’s international standings for improvements. This initiative is grounded in robust scientific planning and a deep understanding of the imperatives for progress across various domains.

The establishment of the National Planning Council represents a significant step towards enhancing Qatar’s strategic planning and development efforts. With a focus on aligning the nation with global advancements and ensuring progress across various sectors, the council is poised to play a key role in shaping Qatar’s strategic trajectory. By collaborating with stakeholders and overseeing the implementation of national development strategies, the council aims to propel Qatar towards the realisation of its long-term vision for economic growth and diversification.
