Oman’s statement at the UN General Assembly in support of Palestine’s request for full UN membership

Dr. Mohammed Awadh Al Hassan, the Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations in New York, recently affirmed Oman’s support for the Palestinian cause in a statement regarding the use of the Veto on Item 63 of the UN agenda. Al Hassan expressed Oman’s regret over the United States’ veto against the State of Palestine’s request for full UN membership, emphasizing Oman’s commitment to peace and the belief that ending the conflict in the Middle East requires the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Al Hassan criticized the obstructive actions of countries that prevent Palestine from obtaining full UN membership, stating that such actions do not serve security or peace in the Middle East or the world. He highlighted the importance of rejecting colonialism and supporting the right to self-determination, emphasizing the need for the international community to support Palestine’s legitimate demands for full UN membership. Al Hassan called for a reconsideration of decisions and positions that hinder peace efforts and urged support for a just and comprehensive peace for all peoples in the region.

The statement made by Oman’s representative emphasized the ongoing illegal occupation of Palestinian territories by Israel and the resistance of the Palestinian people in the face of repeated violations of international law and humanitarian standards. Al Hassan criticized the UN Security Council for failing to uphold peace and security due to unjust positions taken by some countries, leading to continued violence and instability in the region. He called for an end to the occupation, restoration of security and stability, and support for Palestine at obtaining full UN membership to bring about a lasting solution to the decades-long Palestinian issue.

Al Hassan reiterated Oman’s support for the Two-State Solution and safe coexistence, rejecting any schemes that do not lead to a just and comprehensive peace in the region. He affirmed Oman’s commitment to backing the legitimate demands of the Palestinian people and their right to full membership in the United Nations, stressing the importance of international support in achieving peace and security in the Middle East. Oman remains steadfast in its support for Palestine and the resolution of the conflict through peaceful and diplomatic means.

In conclusion, Oman’s delegation to the United Nations in New York reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause and advocating for peace and stability in the Middle East. Dr. Mohammed Awadh Al Hassan highlighted the urgent need for the international community to address the ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories, support Palestine’s bid for full UN membership, and work towards a just and comprehensive peace in the region. Oman’s stance on the issue reflects its dedication to upholding international law, promoting human rights, and contributing to global efforts to achieve lasting peace and security.
