A large wildfire has spread through the suburbs of Athens, leading to thousands of residents being evacuated from their homes. Greece has requested assistance from the European Union to help fight the fire, with countries like Italy, France, the Czech Republic, and Romania sending air and ground support. The extreme heatwave in the country has exacerbated the situation, prompting France, Italy, and the Czech Republic to answer Greece’s call for help. These countries are sending firefighters, vehicles, helicopters, and firefighting aircraft to assist in extinguishing the flames.

The residents in the affected areas have been described as overwhelmed by the threat of fire, with one resident stating that the conditions were chaotic as the fire approached his home. Another resident, who had previously lost his home to a fire, evacuated when ordered but returned to defend his property. Videos posted on social media show the yellow hue in the sky around Athens and large plumes of smoke in the distant skyline. Wildfires are not uncommon in Greece during the summer months, but experts warn that the climate crisis is making these fires more frequent and intense, leading to fatalities in previous years.

These countries are sending firefighting resources, including helicopters, firefighters, vehicles, and aircraft, to help extinguish the flames. Local residents have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the overwhelming threat of fire, with many describing chaotic conditions as the flames approach their properties. Despite the challenges, residents like Giannis Alvanos have commend the firefighters for their quick response time and dedication to protecting the community.
