The upcoming generation of young candidates in European politics is reshaping the stage for lawmakers. Currently, only three Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are under 30 years old, representing Gen Z. However, this is expected to change with the arrival of a new generation of elected representatives. Euronews has highlighted a few of these young candidates and their political journeys.

Maylis Roßberg, a 24-year-old activist from Germany, is representing the South Schleswig Voters’ Association (EFA) in the European Parliament. Despite being an activist rather than a politician, Roßberg was chosen as a Spitzenkandidat by the EFA. She aims to inspire other young women and minorities by advocating for the right to self-determination for peoples. Her priorities include the recognition of minorities, democracy, and diversity in political representation.

Sebastião Bugalho, a 28-year-old from Portugal, is described as a talented young man with conservative, right-wing positions. Known for his TV appearances as a political commentator, he aims to appeal to all generations with his focus on pro-European and Atlanticist policies, housing access, and economic growth.

Nina Skočak, a 26-year-old influencer from Croatia, is passionate about European politics and communication. Despite being primarily portrayed as an influencer by the media, Skočak aims to advocate for youth inclusion in politics, sustainable and green economy, and women’s rights. She has formed an independent list of young candidates to address the lack of representation of young people in politics.

Jordan Bardella, a 28-year-old from France, has had a meteoric political career within the far-right National Rally party. He uses social media platforms like TikTok to reach out to young people and aims to prioritize security, the primacy of French law, and ending illegal immigration.

Kira Marie Peter-Hansen, a 26-year-old from Denmark, is the youngest Member of the European Parliament ever elected. Despite facing criticism for her lack of experience, she has excelled in economic and finance policy. Her priorities include climate action, feminism, and solidarity.

Youth representation in the European Parliament remains low, with only three Members under the age of 30. Efforts are being made to increase young candidates in future elections to bring fresh ideas and perspectives. The European Youth Forum emphasizes the importance of having young politicians who understand the challenges faced by today’s youth, such as climate change, affordable housing, and mental health. Campaigns to lower the candidacy age and increase youth participation in politics are being advocated for to bridge the representation gap and increase engagement among young voters.
