The French Embassy in Kuwait commemorated France’s National Remembrance Day on November 11, 2025, marking the 107th anniversary of the Armistice of November 11, 1918. This significant event was held at the Residence of France, under the patronage of Olivier Gauvin, Ambassador of France to Kuwait. The ceremony was attended by numerous representatives of Kuwaiti civil and military authorities, including Sheikh Abdullah Meshaal Mubarak Al-Sabah, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defense.

## Honoring the Fallen: A Ceremony of Remembrance

The ceremony began with a presentation of decorations, followed by the roll call of the fallen, a minute of silence, and the reading of messages from Catherine Vautrin, Minister for the Armed Forces and Veterans, and Alice Rufo, Minister Delegate. In his address, the Ambassador of France underscored the universal significance of this day of remembrance, which honors the memory of all those who gave their lives for peace and freedom. He highlighted the importance of passing this legacy of memory and solidarity to younger generations, ensuring that the sacrifices made during the First World War are never forgotten.

### A Tribute to French Soldiers

The Ambassador recalled the immense sacrifices of the First World War and the symbolic place of the Unknown Soldier in France’s national consciousness. He emphasized that remembrance extends beyond 1918, encompassing the names and faces of all those who have fallen for France, both past and present. The ceremony paid tribute to French soldiers who died in overseas operations and in the service of peace, particularly those who fell during the liberation of Kuwait. The event held special resonance in Kuwait, given the historic bond between both nations during the Gulf War, when over 18,000 French soldiers fought alongside their Kuwaiti brothers-in-arms and the united international coalition to liberate Kuwait.

## Remembering the Liberation of Kuwait

The Ambassador invited the assembly to remember the sixteen French soldiers who died between 1990 and 1991 during Operation Daguet — the French contribution to the international “Desert Storm” coalition formed following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. He solemnly read their names in tribute, honoring their memory and sacrifice. The names included Staff Sergeant Jacques Burgart, Lieutenant Frédéric Amisse, and Lieutenant-Colonel Guy Demetz, among others. This act of remembrance served as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of French soldiers who fought to liberate Kuwait.

### The Importance of Collective Memory

The Ambassador reminded the audience that peace is never permanently secured, and that collective memory must continue to be nurtured — out of duty of remembrance and solidarity with veterans and the families of the fallen. He referred to the symbol of the “Bleuet de France”, a mark of solidarity with veterans, and emphasized the importance of perpetuating these acts of remembrance. By doing so, France ensures that the sacrifices of its soldiers are never forgotten, and that the spirit of remembrance and solidarity continues to inspire future generations.

## Strengthening Ties Between France and Kuwait

In closing, the Ambassador reaffirmed France’s commitment to strengthening its ties with Kuwaiti authorities and civil society partners. He emphasized that the spirit of remembrance and the shared commitment to peace must remain alive and enduring. The ceremony served as a testament to the strong bond between France and Kuwait, forged through shared experiences and a common commitment to peace and freedom. As the world continues to face new challenges, the legacy of remembrance and solidarity between France and Kuwait remains an important foundation for their continued cooperation and friendship. This day of remembrance not only honored the past but also looked towards a future where peace and cooperation continue to be the guiding principles for both nations.

By commemorating France’s National Remembrance Day, the French Embassy in Kuwait demonstrated its commitment to honoring the memory of those who have given their lives for peace and freedom. The ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the importance of remembrance and the need to continue nurturing collective memory. As France and Kuwait continue to strengthen their ties, the spirit of remembrance and solidarity will remain an essential part of their shared heritage.
