Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has yet to publicly comment on Marine Le Pen’s right-wing party’s recent victory in the first round of the French elections. However, other officials in Italy have expressed their views on the matter. Matteo Salvini, a right-wing figure and ally of Le Pen, congratulated her while also taking the opportunity to criticize French President Emmanuel Macron. Enrico Letta of the Democratic Party, Italy’s main opposition party, stated that the Italian government’s attitude in Europe depends on the outcome of the French elections, suggesting that Meloni’s decision to abstain in the EU summit vote was influenced by Le Pen’s expected victory in the first round.

Although Meloni has remained silent on the issue, reports from Italian media outlets suggest that she may have actually preferred a more decisive victory for Le Pen in the first round to disrupt power balances within the European Union. It is reported that Meloni has expressed frustration over being excluded from discussions regarding EU top job appointments. The Italian newspaper La Repubblica has claimed that Meloni’s strategy may be to leverage Le Pen’s advantage in order to secure a top Commission post for Italy, potentially strengthening the role of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) in the EU.

The Italian media has highlighted the potential benefits that Le Pen’s advantage could bring to Meloni and the ECR in the EU. Le Pen’s strong showing in the first round is seen as a positive development that could aid Meloni in her goal of securing a top Commission post for Italy. This perceived advantage has the potential to impact power dynamics within the EU, particularly with regards to key appointments and decision-making processes. While Meloni has not publicly commented on the situation, reports indicate that her silence may be indicative of a strategic approach to leverage Le Pen’s success for her own benefit.

In the wake of Marine Le Pen’s victory in the first round of the French elections, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has yet to publicly address the situation. However, other Italian officials have been quick to respond, with Matteo Salvini congratulating Le Pen and criticizing Emmanuel Macron, while Enrico Letta highlighted the potential impact of the French elections on Italian government attitudes towards the EU. Reports suggest that Meloni may be strategically positioning herself to take advantage of Le Pen’s success to strengthen her own position and secure key EU appointments for Italy.

The Italian media has highlighted the implications of Marine Le Pen’s advantage for Giorgia Meloni and the ECR’s role in the EU. Meloni’s reported preference for a decisive victory for Le Pen in the first round suggests a desire to disrupt power balances within the EU. Her frustration over being excluded from EU top job talks indicates a desire to assert Italy’s influence in key decision-making processes. Le Pen’s strong showing is seen as a potential boon for Meloni’s ambitions, potentially leading to increased prominence for the ECR in the EU and bolstering Italy’s position within the bloc.
