France and the Netherlands faced off in a highly anticipated UEFA Euro 2024 Group D football match that ended in a goalless draw. The match, held at Leipzig Stadium in Leipzig, saw both teams putting up a strong fight, with France’s Antoine Griezmann missing key chances and the Netherlands’ Xavi Simons having a goal disallowed. The result leaves both teams with four points in the group standings after their second match.

The absence of star striker Kylian Mbappé, who was on the substitutes’ bench, was a talking point leading up to the match. Mbappé had broken his nose in France’s previous match against Austria, and there were speculations about his availability. Despite training with a face mask and coach Didier Deschamps expressing optimism about his participation, Mbappé did not take the field, as Deschamps decided not to risk his star player in a game that his team did not necessarily need to win.

The game saw significant action on both ends, with France applying pressure in the second half. Aurélien Tchouaméni and Ousmane Dembélé came close to scoring, but were denied by the Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. In the 69th minute, Xavi found the back of the net for the Netherlands, only for the goal to be ruled out due to Denzel Dumfries being offside and interfering with the play.

The result of the match also had implications for Poland, who had lost to Austria earlier in the day. With no points from their first two matches, Poland is now the first team to be eliminated from the tournament. They are guaranteed to finish at the bottom of Group D, regardless of the result of their final match against France.

Overall, the match between France and the Netherlands showcased a competitive encounter between two European football powerhouses. Despite the absence of Mbappé, both teams displayed quality performances, with Griezmann and Xavi standing out for their respective sides. The draw keeps both teams in contention for advancing to the knockout stages of the tournament, setting up an exciting final matchday in Group D.
