Formula One has decided to do away with the bonus point for the fastest lap in a race from the 2025 season onwards. This decision was made by the FIA, the governing body of Formula One, ahead of the United States Grand Prix. The bonus point, which was originally introduced in the 1950s and then brought back in 2019, was awarded to the driver who set the fastest lap and finished in the top ten. This change in the scoring system has the potential to have a significant impact over the course of a long season with 24 races.

Apart from the removal of the bonus point for the fastest lap, the FIA also announced other changes to the 2024 and 2025 sporting and technical regulations. One of the key changes is the increase in the requirement to run a young driver during free practice sessions from once per car per season to twice per car per season. This move aims to provide more opportunities for young and upcoming drivers to gain experience and showcase their talents on the Formula One stage.

The decision to eliminate the bonus point for the fastest lap comes after a recent incident at the Singapore Grand Prix where Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo pitted for new tires to set the fastest lap in his final race. This strategic move by Ricciardo denied competitors like McLaren and their driver Lando Norris a potential additional point. Norris was leading the race with the fastest lap when Ricciardo set a new lap record, ultimately robbing Norris of the bonus point.

The removal of the bonus point for the fastest lap adds a new dynamic to the competition in Formula One, as drivers and teams will now have to reconsider their strategies during races. The change also reflects the FIA’s commitment to ensuring fairness and equality in the sport, by eliminating an element that could potentially have a significant impact on the final results. With these new regulations in place, drivers and teams will have to focus on overall race performance rather than just aiming for the fastest lap to secure an additional point.

As Formula One continues to evolve and adapt to the changing landscape of motorsport, these changes to the scoring system and regulations highlight the sport’s commitment to innovation and competitiveness. The increased opportunities for young drivers to participate in free practice sessions also signal a positive step towards nurturing talent and providing a platform for the next generation of Formula One stars to shine. With the 2025 season set to bring about these changes, fans can look forward to an exciting and unpredictable season ahead, as drivers and teams adjust their strategies to contend for victory on the track.
