May’s full moon, known as the Flower Moon, is set to shine in the UAE’s night sky on May 22. This phenomenon is called the Flower Moon as it typically coincides with the blooming of flowers around the world. In Dubai, the brightness of the Flower Moon will allow residents to observe it without the need for telescopes or binoculars. For those interested in capturing the Moon in photographs, the optimal moment is during its rise, advised by Hasan Al Hariri, CEO of the Dubai Astronomy Group.
The Flower Moon has other names like the Planting Moon, Milk Moon, and Hare Moon, but the most popular name, Flower Moon, has roots in Native American and Colonial American traditions. Each full moon was named to reflect the season and natural cycles, with the Flower Moon honoring the renewal and growth seen in May with blooming flowers. The phenomenon of the full moon is due to the Moon’s position in its orbit around the Earth, with the Moon appearing bright and visible during the full moon phase.
While the Flower Moon may not be significantly different in size or brightness compared to a regular full moon, it will still be a magnificent sight in the night sky because of its position in the constellation Leo. The Flower Moon will rise around sunset, reach a maximum altitude of 29 degrees above the horizon, and set at around 2 am the following morning. The distance of the Moon from Earth during a full moon can vary, ranging from around 225,000 miles to 252,000 miles.
In addition to the Flower Moon, there are other celestial events to look out for in May in Dubai. The Eta Aquariid meteor shower, known for its fast and bright meteors, peaked around May 5 and 6 but can still be seen occasionally until May 27. This shower, a remnant of Halley’s Comet, offered around 100 meteors per hour at its peak during the pre-dawn hours. Stargazers in Dubai have plenty of opportunities to marvel at the beauty of the night sky throughout the month of May.
