Ethiopian runner Yomif Kejelcha made headlines over the weekend by breaking the men’s half-marathon record by just one second in Valencia, Spain. Clocking in at an impressive 57 minutes and 30 seconds, Kejelcha surpassed the previous record set by Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo in Lisbon, Portugal in 2021. Kejelcha, a former silver medalist in the 10,000 meters at the world championships, is no stranger to breaking records, as he also holds the indoor world record for the mile.

The new record set by Kejelcha will undergo ratification procedures by World Athletics before being officially recognized. This close margin of one second for breaking the record is not a new trend, as Kiplimo also broke the previous record by just a single second. When Kiplimo set his record, he shaved off a second from the time set by Kibiwott Kandie of Kenya in Valencia the year before, showcasing the intense competition and drive for excellence among elite athletes in the sport.

On the women’s side, there was also excitement as Kenyan runner Agnes Ngetich came close to breaking the women’s half-marathon record but fell short by just 11 seconds. The current record of 1 hour, 2 minutes, and 52 seconds was set by Letesenbet Gidey in Valencia in 2021. Although Ngetich’s time was the second-fastest in history, it was not enough to secure a new record. This marked Ngetich’s first time racing the half-marathon, showing her versatility and potential in different distances.

The Valencia half-marathon has proven to be a hotspot for record-breaking performances, with both men’s and women’s records being set in recent years. The fast and flat course in Valencia, combined with favorable racing conditions, has attracted top athletes from around the world looking to test their limits and achieve new personal bests. The drive to break records and showcase one’s talents on a global stage has made Valencia a popular destination for elite runners seeking to make their mark in the sport of distance running.

Kejelcha’s remarkable achievement in breaking the men’s half-marathon record by just one second has solidified his status as one of the top distance runners in the world. With an impressive resume of accomplishments in various track events, Kejelcha’s latest record-breaking performance in Valencia has captured the attention of fans and fellow athletes alike. As the sport of distance running continues to evolve and push the boundaries of human performance, athletes like Kejelcha and Ngetich serve as inspiring examples of dedication, hard work, and sheer determination in pursuit of greatness.

In conclusion, the Valencia half-marathon provided a platform for elite athletes to showcase their talent and push the limits of human endurance. Kejelcha’s record-breaking run, coupled with Ngetich’s impressive performance, highlights the fierce competition and excitement that surrounds professional distance running. As athletes continue to chase records and inspire the next generation of runners, events like the Valencia half-marathon play a crucial role in promoting the sport and celebrating the incredible feats of those who dedicate their lives to running.
