Regular endurance exercise has been shown to improve the health of subcutaneous adipose tissue, which is crucial for individuals with overweight or obesity. This type of tissue can develop abnormalities that may lead to serious health issues such as insulin resistance and metabolic conditions. The University of Michigan conducted a study that found individuals who engaged in endurance exercise for over 2 years had adipose tissue with increased fat-storing blood vessels and an expanded lipid storage capacity.

The study, published in Nature Metabolism, compared adipose tissue samples from regular endurance exercisers with overweight or obesity to samples from sedentary individuals with similar body compositions. The findings revealed that the exercisers’ adipose tissue exhibited higher levels of blood vessels, lipogenic storage capacity, beneficial proteins, mitochondria, and reduced inflammatory factors. These differences suggest that regular exercise can help adipose tissue store fat in a healthier manner.

Metabolic abnormalities in adipose tissue have been linked to various health complications, including insulin resistance, inflammation, and obesity-related conditions. The study recruited 52 adults with overweight or obesity, 24 of whom were regular exercisers. By analyzing subcutaneous adipose tissue samples from these individuals, the researchers were able to confirm the positive impact of endurance exercise on fat storage and metabolic function.

Subcutaneous adipose tissue plays a crucial role in storing fat and maintaining metabolic regulation. Compared to visceral fat cells deep inside the body, subcutaneous fat is considered to be more benign. Fat distribution in the body is primarily determined by genetics, and factors such as hormonal changes, reduced physical activity, and aging can contribute to weight gain. Contrary to popular belief, targeted exercises like sit-ups may not effectively reduce belly fat, as fat loss occurs throughout the body.

As individuals age, they tend to replace muscle mass with fat mass, leading to changes in body composition. While fat cells have the ability to stretch and increase in size, they do not disappear unless removed through procedures like liposuction. Therefore, it is important for individuals to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, to support the health of their adipose tissue. Overall, the study highlights the benefits of endurance exercise in promoting healthy fat storage and metabolic function, particularly for individuals with overweight or obesity.
