Earthna Centre for a Sustainable Future, part of Qatar Foundation, is dedicated to protecting and restoring the environment through various initiatives. The Earthna Prize, with a total award of $1 million, aims to recognize organizations using traditional practices to address environmental issues in areas such as water resource management, food security, and sustainable urbanism. This prize seeks to educate and activate the global environmental movement.

Working in five key areas including sustainability frameworks, energy transition, biodiversity, cities, and education, Earthna aims to compile a comprehensive knowledge base on Qatar’s ecosystems and biodiversity. Dr. Gonzalo Castro de la Mata, Executive Director of Earthna, has spearheaded efforts to publish a book on Qatar’s ecosystems and biodiversity, shedding light on the country’s natural heritage. The forthcoming publication will be accompanied by a policy statement highlighting critical areas such as the marine environment and desert resilience.

One of Earthna’s key conservation projects is the mangrove restoration initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and Qatar University. This project combines research with practical restoration strategies to revitalize Qatar’s mangrove habitats. Mangroves play a crucial role in protecting Qatar’s coastline from sea level rise and are vital for the ecosystem. This project reflects Earthna’s dedication to sustainable environmental stewardship.

Earthna is preparing to release a policy note summarizing the key findings and recommendations from the upcoming book on Qatar’s biodiversity and ecosystems. This document will emphasize the importance of the marine environment, desert resilience, and rural landscapes in maintaining ecological balance. The organization is committed to preserving Qatar’s natural heritage and advocating for sustainable environmental practices.

With the deadline for the Earthna Prize fast approaching, organizations have a limited time to submit applications or nominations for their innovative environmental solutions. The prize aims to diversify and mobilize the environmental movement globally by recognizing and supporting traditional practices that promote sustainability. Earthna’s focus on biodiversity, ecosystems, and climate change underscores their commitment to building a sustainable future for Qatar and beyond.

As Earthna continues to engage experts and stakeholders both locally and globally, their efforts to compile knowledge on Qatar’s ecosystems and biodiversity are shaping policy and conservation strategies. Through initiatives like the mangrove restoration project, Earthna is actively working towards protecting Qatar’s natural environment and promoting sustainable practices. With the publication and policy statement on the horizon, Earthna is poised to contribute significantly to understanding and safeguarding Qatar’s rich biodiversity and ecosystems.
