An Israeli teenager convicted of murder in Dubai is seeking to overturn his life sentence by filing an appeal in court, claiming self-defense. In January, the Dubai Court of First Instance found the 19-year-old guilty of premeditatedly killing a 33-year-old man outside a shisha cafe in Business Bay area. The teen stabbed his compatriot to death with a knife, leading to his conviction. However, the defense lawyer argued that there was no deliberate intent behind the murder, stating that the victim initiated the assault by attacking the defendant with a chair, leading him to defend himself.
The teenager, along with five of his friends, were sentenced to 10 years in jail each for aiding and abetting in the crime. After serving their time, they will be deported. The incident started when the victim and his friend arrived at the shisha cafe where the defendant and his friends were. A quarrel ensued, leading to the victim cursing the defendant’s mother and sister. The victim tried to prevent the defendant from chasing his friend, resulting in a physical altercation where the defendant defended himself by stabbing the victim.
Less than 24 hours after the murder, the Dubai Police managed to track down and arrest the suspects. It was revealed that the group knew the victim and his relatives, and the murder stemmed from previous disputes and vengeance issues dating back to their time in Israel. In a surprising twist, the defense lawyer argued that the victim had been threatening to kill her client back home, forcing him to come to Dubai in search of a job. The lawyer emphasized that her client was defending himself and pushing the victim away when he attacked him with a chair.
The lawyer requested a reduced and lenient punishment for her client based on his age and cultural norms, stating that obtaining a weapon was casual in his culture and that he didn’t possess the knife with the intent to kill. She asked the appellate court to acquit her client of murder and dismiss the prosecutors’ appeal for a stiffer punishment.
