The Dhofar khareef season in Muscat is set to begin on Friday, bringing with it a change in weather conditions that cover the coastal wilayats of the Dhofar Governorate. This season, influenced by monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, will continue until September 21. The autumn season in Dhofar is characterized by cloudy and rainy weather with moderate temperatures, particularly in the high mountainous areas shrouded in fog and light rain. This unique climate makes Dhofar Governorate a popular destination for visitors and tourists from both within and outside of Oman.

During the khareef season, the mountainous areas and plains of Dhofar are transformed into lush green landscapes as a result of continuous light rain and intermittent drizzle. The flowing water in the springs of the governorate increases, becoming beautiful tourist attractions. Some of the most popular springs and waterfalls include Razat, Hamran, Gerziz, Sahelnot, Tobruk, Darbat, Athum, Kor, Jujib, and Al-Houta Waterfall in the state of Rakhyut. These natural attractions are a testament to the diversity of Dhofar’s terrain, which includes marine, agricultural, mountainous, and desert environments, as well as archaeological and historical sites such as Al Baleed and Samharam Archaeological Parks, the Land of Frankincense Museum, and historical forts in various wilayats.

The city of Salalah experiences a surge in commercial activity during the khareef season as tourists and visitors flock to traditional shops selling frankincense, incense, silver, pottery products, Omani sweets, and restaurants serving traditional Omani cuisine. The Salalah Plain is known for its tropical agricultural products like coconuts, bananas, papaya, and sugarcane, as well as its beautiful creeks, natural reserves, and rich animal and marine wealth. Government and private agencies prepare each year to welcome tourists by providing facilities and services that cater to their needs, ensuring a pleasant and memorable experience during their visit.

In 2023, the number of visitors to the Dhofar Governorate during the fall season increased by 18.4 percent to reach about 962,000 visitors and tourists. The total spending of visitors during the season amounted to OMR 103 million, showcasing the economic significance of tourism during the khareef season in Dhofar. With its stunning natural beauty, diverse landscapes, and plethora of attractions, Dhofar Governorate continues to be a sought-after destination for travelers looking to experience the unique charm of the khareef season in Muscat. Whether it’s exploring the green mountains, visiting historical sites, indulging in local cuisine, or shopping for traditional products, Dhofar offers something for every type of traveler to enjoy during this magical time of year.
