The Danish government, along with several children’s organizations, has formed a new alliance to combat the addictive nature of social media platforms. The alliance aims to protect children in the EU from the potentially harmful effects of the design and business models of tech giants. Features such as infinite scrolling, autoplay, and streaks are being targeted, as they are designed to keep users engaged on the platforms. Algorithms that expose children and young people to disturbing content are also a focus of the alliance.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized the importance of prioritizing children’s interests in the face of powerful tech giants who have failed to take responsibility for the impact of their platforms on young users. Frederiksen expressed concern about children admitting to being addicted to social media, with one teenager spending a large portion of their day on an app like TikTok. She condemned the industry for failing to introduce effective age controls and remove harmful content that can negatively impact children.

Johanne Schmidt-Nielsen, the General Secretary for Save the Children, stressed the need for actual age verification and age-appropriate content requirements on social media platforms. Schmidt-Nielsen highlighted the importance of protecting children from inappropriate content that even adults should not be exposed to. She emphasized the need for children to be able to reach out to adults for help when faced with potentially harmful online content.

Christine Ravn Lund, chairwoman of the Danish Youth Council, proposed finding a better balance between physical and digital activities in the lives of children and youth. By encouraging a more balanced lifestyle, Lund believes that children can avoid becoming addicted to social media and technology. The alliance hopes to promote a healthier relationship with digital platforms while also emphasizing the importance of engaging in offline activities.

The Danish government’s ministries of business, culture, and digitalization are all expected to participate in the initiative to protect children from the negative effects of social media platforms. By joining forces with children’s organizations, the government aims to hold tech giants accountable for the impact of their platforms on young users. The alliance is focused on creating a safer online environment for children in the EU and advocating for measures that prioritize children’s well-being.

In conclusion, the new alliance formed by the Danish government and children’s organizations highlights the importance of protecting children from the addictive nature of social media platforms. By addressing features like infinite scrolling and autoplay, as well as harmful algorithms, the alliance aims to create a safer online environment for young users. The government’s commitment to prioritizing children’s interests and holding tech giants accountable is a crucial step towards promoting a healthier relationship with digital technology among children and youth. By advocating for age verification and age-appropriate content requirements, the alliance hopes to ensure that children are shielded from potentially harmful online content. Through a combined effort from various ministries and organizations, the initiative seeks to strike a balance between digital and physical activities in the lives of children and promote a safer online experience for young users in the EU.
