Oman’s coastline, spanning 3,165 kilometres, is a haven for travellers seeking marine adventures. The diverse beaches, each with its own unique charm, seamlessly blend into Oman’s stunning landscape. To showcase Oman’s coastline and its potential for adventure tourism, the Oman Tourism Development Company (OMRAN Group) launched the ‘Oman Downwinder’ initiative. This initiative aims to diversify tourism and enhance the adventure and experience sector in Oman. The first edition of Oman Downwinder will feature participants engaging in kite surfing along a 500km stretch of coastline, starting from Duqm in Al Wusta Governorate on July 2 and concluding at Ras Al Jinz Reserve in South Sharqiyah Governorate on July 8.

The launch ceremony for Oman Downwinder, held at the W Muscat Hotel, was attended by various officials, including Dr. Hashil Obaid Al Mahrouqi, CEO of OMRAN Group, and Dr. Khamis Salem Al Jabri, CEO of Oman Sail. Al Mahrouqi highlighted the natural assets of Oman and the importance of hosting events like Oman Downwinder to showcase the country’s tourism potential. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with OMRAN’s strategic directions to enhance tourism diversification and adventure experiences. Marcelo Antunes Ferreira, CEO of Sea and Beach Projects S.P.C, expressed that the event will attract professional and amateur athletes worldwide through media coverage, highlighting Oman’s tourist attractions.

The event will feature 12 participants, including former world kite surfing champion Ruben Lenten, British champion Hannah Whiteley, and an athlete promoting inclusive sports for people with disabilities. Local Omani surfers like Barakat Al Kindi, Azzan Al Sinani, and Majid Jamal Al Kharusi will also take part. Participants will navigate through towering cliffs and vibrant waters, creating a perfect setting for kite surfing. Hannah Whiteley, a professional kite surfer, expressed her excitement for the event, acknowledging Oman’s potential as a surfing destination. She highlighted the event’s significance in promoting Oman and hoped for its annual organization to attract more surfers to the country.

The ‘Oman Downwinder’ initiative is organized in collaboration with Oman Sail, Visit Oman, and the Oman Adventure Center, involving local institutions and small and medium-sized enterprises to enhance local content. The event is expected to promote Oman as a prominent global destination for hosting sports events and adventure activities. Participants will experience the thrill of kite surfing in Oman’s picturesque coastal settings. The initiative aligns with OMRAN’s commitment to enhancing the adventure and experience sector in Oman, leveraging the country’s diverse natural potentials.

Overall, the ‘Oman Downwinder’ initiative aims to showcase Oman’s coastline as a hub for adventure tourism. By hosting events like this, Oman seeks to attract international athletes and tourists, promoting the country’s diverse natural assets and adventures. The participation of local surfers and the collaboration with various institutions demonstrate a concerted effort to boost tourism and showcase Oman’s position on the international tourism map. With its stunning beaches and vibrant waters, Oman’s coastline offers the perfect backdrop for kite surfing and other exciting adventures, making it a must-visit destination for adventure enthusiasts worldwide.
